The B & I Line : a history of the British and Irish Steam
Packet
Company
This book relates the history of the B & I (British and Irish Steam Packet Company) in three parts. Part 1 tells the story of the City of Dublin Steam Packet Company which was founded in 1824. For many years it held the contract for mails from Britain to Ireland. Part 2 relates the history of the old B & I Steam Packet Company, which was founded in 1836. Part 3 deals with the Cork Steamship Company, which mainly served southern Ireland to Wales. However, its most famous ship was the Sirius, which in April 1838 sailed into New York and thus became the first steamship to inaugurate a regular transatlantic service. The modern B & I is the sucessor to these three companies. The book has black and white photos and illustrations. Appendix 1 lists the captains of the fleet 1934-84; Appendix 2 lists the Chief Engineers; Appendix 3 has a fleet list (1984). There is an index of ships and a general index.

British mail steamers to South America, 1851-1965 : a history of the Royal Mail Steam
Packet
Company
A business history of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company (later Royal Mail Lines), which from 1851 provided a mail service between Britain and South America. The author explores the wider political and economic context, covers the development of Argentina and Brazil as trading nations, and changes in ship design leading to the development of greater cargo capacities. He also looks at the importance of the refrigerated meat trade and the growth of passenger services. Facing the challenges of international competition, air travel and containerisation, the company ran into serious financial difficulties and was finally acquired by Furness, Withy & Co in 1965. Tables chart the changing trade conditions and financial position of the company. A fleet list covering the period 1851-1965 is included.

Turbine excursion steamers : a history /compiled by Alistair Deayton & Iain Quinn.
"In 1897, a revolutionary new type of ship blasted its way through the Royal Review at an unprecedented 30+knots. This small vessel, still extant in Newcastle, was the Turbinia, and she was powered by the world's first marine steam turbine. Developed by Charles Parsons, in one fell swoop she revolutionised sea travel. She was the first turbine steamer. Economical and fast, the turbine steamer was soon to revolutionise ferries and pleasure steamers, as well as huge ocean liners and the mightiest of battleships. The turbine not only promised speed, economy and reliability, it delivered these qualities too. Our story looks at the turbine pleasure steamers in coastal and short-sea service and it covers the first passenger steam turbine vessels on the Clyde, as well as the Irish Sea and South Coast of England as well as the German turbine pleasure steamers. From the ships of Williamson-Buchanan to the Isle of Man and cross channel ferries, the turbine revolutionised short sea transport. Alistair Deayton and Iain Quinn look at the development of the turbine steamer for pleasure use, concentrating on the ships that served the Clyde, Irish Sea and the short sea crossings in the English Channel. Ships of the Isle of Man Steam Packet, Williamson-Buchanan, Caledonian Steam Packet, General Steam Navigation Co., David MacBrayne and the Liverpool & North Wales Steam Ship Co. are covered in depth in this new book, which tells the story of the turbine excursion steamer over the century and a bit since the first revolutionary turbine pleasure steamer made its maiden voyage on the Clyde at the dawn of the Edwardian era."--Provided by the publisher.

Cross channel and short sea ferries : an illustrated history /by Ambrose Greenway.
"This new book, beautifully illustrated with a magnificent collection of over 300 photographs, covers the development of a much-loved type of vessel, the 'classic' cross channel or short sea passenger ferry often described as a liner in miniature. From the mid-19th century paddle ferries slowly evolved into screw-driven steamers but it was the advent of the steam turbine and the construction of the railway steamers The Queen and Brighton in 1903 that caught the attention of the world. Similarly-propelled ships multiplied and their use soon spread to the Antipodes, Japan, the Mediterranean and North America. In 1912 Rudolf Diesel's new oil engine went to sea in a cargo ship but it was not until 1925 that it was first employed to widespread acclaim in the Danish North Sea packet Parkeston. In 1934 it made its debut on the English Channel with the Belgian Government's striking 25-knot motor ferry Prins Baudouin. The inexorable increase in car travel from the 1930s led to the development of a new breed of specialised car ferry accessed through bow and stern doors and the proliferation of these after WW2 led to the eventual demise of the 'classic' passenger ferry in the 1960s. With its informative introductory texts and abundant photographs and detailed captions, this book will appeal to ship enthusiasts around the world and to all those who mourn the passing of the golden age of the passenger ship."--Provided by the publisher.

In fair weather and in foul : 30 years of Scottish passenger ships and ferries
A photographic review of the ships of the Caledonian MacBrayne line, a successor company of those originally established by David MacBrayne in 1851 and James Williamson who founded the Caledonian Steam Packet Company on the River Clyde in 1889. The book covers a thirty-year period from 1969 when the Scottish Transport Group came into existence and took control of the main shipping services in the Clyde and West Highlands, changing the focus from passenger routes using rail and steamer connections to ferries able to carry cars and road freight. Caledonian MacBrayne Ltd was formed in 1973 and the Clyde and West Highlands fleets were combined. The book covers ships operating in the Clyde and West Highlands prior to unification, the combined fleet thereafter and ferries operating in the Orkney and Shetland Islands. There are detailed descriptions and photographs of the vessels, an index of ship names and an appendix lists major vessels and their routes.

200 years of Clyde paddle steamers / Alistair Deayton & Iain Quinn.
"In August 1812, two centuries ago, the River Clyde would see a transport revolution - one that would change the economy of the river for ever. A Helensburgh hotel owner began to operate Europe's first ever commercial steam ship from Glasgow to Greenock. No longer would ships be dependent on the tide or the wind. The Comet, as his ship was known, had been built by John Wood, of Port Glasgow, and was fitted with paddle wheels. Her first voyage from Glasgow to Greenock was made at about 5 mph against a headwind. Advertised to sail on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from Glasgow, the Comet operated the first scheduled steamship service in Europe. It was the start of a revolution that would see the Clyde as the greatest shipbuilding river in the world, and the river's estuary as a haven for pleasure steamers and puffers calling at the remote loch-side piers and inlets. Companies such as David MacBrayne's and the Caledonian Steam Packet Co. would be formed to operate steamers far and wide, a legacy kept alive today by the Paddle Steamer Waverley. Alistair Deayton and Ian Quinn take us through the two centuries of Clyde paddle steamers, illustrating the most famous, such as the Columba, Jeanie Deans and Waverley, illustrating not just the ships themselves but the piers they sailed from, from Rothesay to Helensburgh and from Loch Goil to Loch Long."--From back cover.
